Edward Waters College - Accepting Students Displaced by Hurricane Katrina;
Newly Re-Accredited College is a Center for Donation Relief

Jacksonville, FL – College officials announced that Edward Waters College will accept students that were displaced as a result of the devastating impact of Hurricane Katrina. Students from UNCF member institutions Dillard University and Xavier University, and other colleges from the area, can apply for enrollment at EWC.

“This is a sad and crucial experience in New Orleans and we want to be able to reach out to persons in need,” said Dr. Oswald P. Bronson, Sr., president of EWC.

Students who are interested in applying to EWC are encouraged to complete the admissions process by September 15 and may call 904.470.8050 for admissions information. Fees (housing, deposit, and application) generally associated with the admissions process are being waived.

Not only is the College accepting these displaced students, but the Office of Student Affairs will hold a rally on Saturday morning, September 3, beginning at 9 a.m. to collect donations to be forwarded to the hurricane victims.

“The students have already begun to collect items for the hurricane relief fund, and will be on campus Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., and on Sunday from 9 a.m. to 12 noon to accept donations from the community,” said Dr. Karen Buckman, vice president for Student Affairs. Live entertainment is also being planned for Saturday beginning at 10 a.m.

Congresswoman Corrine Brown, along with PRI, EWC, and other local elected officials held a press conference on campus today to announce that EWC is the “Jacksonville Cares” donation site for goods to be sent to the victims.

“The rescue and relief efforts are disorganized and time is of the essence,” stated Congresswoman Brown. “The citizens [of New Orleans] are poor and without resources. I am calling on all the citizens of Jacksonville to reach into their hearts and give to the people in New Orleans, LA.”

The donation site is located at the corner of Kings Road and Pearce Street, in the Tookes Building parking lot.

Edward Waters College
Edward Waters College was established in 1866 to educate the descendants of African Americans, newly emancipated from slavery. Today, its enrollment continues to be substantially African-American students from the Southeast and Northeast regions of the United States, while also welcoming students from all racial and ethnic groups within the United States and abroad. The College is a private, four-year, liberal arts, coeducational, residential institution, committed to Christian principles which emphasize high moral and spiritual values, as a result of its close affiliation with, and support from, the African Methodist Episcopal Church. The College is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award baccalaureate degrees. The College offers these degrees in the arts and sciences and other career-based professional fields.
