Dr. Phillips High School Golf Champion Robbie Biggers Makes the Cut
at South Carolina State and Prepares to Take the Sport by Storm

by Lisa Moten
PUBLISHED MAY/JUNE 2005

An extraordinary future before him, he ended his high school career the same way he started it - on a high note. Tangelo Park resident and 2005 graduating senior Robbie Biggers is headed to Orangeburg, South Carolina after a highly decorated, record-breaking career at Orlando’s Dr. Phillips High School. Biggers, 18, was the sole candidate this year to be offered the South Carolina HBCU’s prestigious golf scholarship.

A natural-born trailblazer, Robbie was the first Black freshman to make the Orlando high school’s esteemed men’s varsity golf team.

Leading his team to a third place finish at State Championships, his performance earned him the title Florida Class 2-A Regional Champion - making him only the second Dr. Phillips High School golfer to hold that title. With a handicap of three, Robbie holds the school record for lowest nine-hole score (30), and lowest regional score (65).

This year, the Orlando Minority Youth Golf Association (OMYGA) voted Robbie 'Player of the Decade' and 'Co-Player of the Year'. The program’s founder and executive director, Dr. T.J. Dorsey, has seen him evolve into a scholar, a superb athlete, and a fine young man. “It has been my great pleasure to mentor Robert Biggers in the game of golf,” he said. “His integrity is without question.”

Biggers credits his success and his drive to having positive role models and a strong, supportive family foundation. He calls his mother Renaa his ‘rock.’ “My mother is my hero. She loved me unconditionally, gave me a kick in the pants when I needed it, drove me all over the place for practices and tournaments, and cheered the loudest for me, no matter how I performed.” And his secret to success? “Practice, practice, practice,” he says.

Biggers plans to maximize his scholarship and his time at South Carolina State before taking his place among golf’s elite on the PGA circuit. He will major in psychology with a minor in sports management.

America, take note. Robbie Biggers is a name the golfing world need not forget any time soon. Says the focused young champion, “I’m on my way.”
